This is Charles Nicolai reporting on watch dogs Perverted Justice and their efforts to expose predator criminals lurking on the Internet.
Perverted Justice is an organization that is dedicated to protecting America's youth.
Joining forces with local law enforcement, Perverted Justice conducts Internet sting operations to bring down predators looking to contact children in illegal ways.
Some parents don't think this problem is as real as it is.
Sue Johnson from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children maintains that 1 out of 5 kids who use the Internet has been propositioned for sex.
In an effort to lower these numbers, Perverted Justice teamed up with NBC to create the hit TV show To Catch a Predator.
To Catch a Predator was an expansion of Perverted Justice's Internet a sting operations. The show used television to highlight and expose the dangers and criminals that are lurking on the Internet.
The show was taken off the air when a controversy arose after an accused predator took his own life during a stand off with police.
This show raised many ethical questions on the tactics used to expose these predators.
No matter the controversy it is obvious that Perverted Justice is making great strides in trying to protect America's youth from the Dangers of online predators.
I took time to sit down with Perverted Justice founder, Xavier Von Erck
to find out a little more about the Foundation.
C: Hello Mr. Von Erck thank you for your time.
X: Its no problem, I'm glad to be here.
C: What initially inspired you to create this website?
X: It began with a conversation between myself and another member of a Portland based chat room that really got the ball rolling. We both noticed the vast amounts of strange and creepy men attempting to solicit young kids. In general the organization is motivated by the idea of getting these guys off the Internet through our cooperation with law enforcement and media outlets.
C: Thats very interesting. What other work is Perverted Justice involved in?
X: Obviously we catch predators, however that is just one aspect. We are currently working to expand on all fronts in the war against Internet predators and pedophiles in general. We are moving into training efforts with law enforcement, making sure they can benefit from our work. We have an internship for Criminal Justice majors and we are also available for speaking engagements to raise public awareness.
C: Around how many predators do you find a day?
X: It really depends on how many volunteers are working on a given day. In January 2006 we set a national record of 21 in one night. But with proper man power we could easily make at least one arrest a day. Every time we enter a chat room we are solicited in someway, it is still a huge epidemic online.
Well thank you for taking the time for this interview. That is all the time we have for today. To find out more about Perverted Justice their website is Perverted-Justice.com
Reporting live from Philadelphia this is Charles Nicolai. Goodnight.
